Window Cleaning: DIY vs. Professional — Is It Worth Doing Yourself?

Window Cleaning: DIY vs. Professional — Is It Worth Doing Yourself?

Most people have tried cleaning their own windows at some point. A microfibre cloth, some glass cleaner, maybe a squeegee from the hardware store. The result is usually streaky glass, missed corners, and the nagging feeling that it looked better before you started.

Here's an honest breakdown of when DIY makes sense and when it doesn't.

What DIY window cleaning actually involves

Cleaning windows properly — not just wiping them — requires the right tools, technique, and products. Professional window cleaners use:

  • Professional-grade squeegees with rubber blades that need regular replacement
  • Scrubbers and applicators to loosen dirt before squeegeeing
  • Proper cleaning solution (not household glass spray, which leaves residue)
  • Technique — the pull stroke, fanning, and detailing edges without leaving water marks
  • Ladders or extension poles for upper floors

  • None of this is complicated, but it takes practice to do without streaks. Most people don't clean windows often enough to get good at it.

    When DIY is fine

    DIY works reasonably well if:

  • You're only doing ground-floor windows
  • Your windows are small and easy to reach
  • You're doing a quick wipe-down, not a thorough clean
  • You're comfortable with the result not being streak-free

  • For a bach, a small unit, or a quick freshen-up before guests arrive — DIY is perfectly adequate.

    When DIY doesn't work

Second storey and above. Ladder work is genuinely dangerous if you're not experienced. Falls from ladders are one of the most common causes of serious injury at home. If your windows are above ground level, the risk isn't worth it.

Mineral deposits and salt buildup. If you're in a coastal suburb — Herne Bay, Mission Bay, Takapuna, Devonport — salt air deposits minerals on glass that don't come off with standard cleaning. You need specific products and technique. DIY attempts often just smear the buildup around.

Post-construction residue. Paint overspray, silicone, and adhesive from protective film require mechanical removal and chemical solvents. Attempting this without the right tools risks scratching the glass permanently.

Large properties. Cleaning 40+ panes, inside and out, including frames and sills, is a full day's work. Most homeowners start strong and cut corners by the end — leaving the job half-done.

Character homes and hard-to-reach windows. Older Auckland homes often have windows over stairwells, above decks, or in awkward positions that require extension poles or ladders at angles that aren't safe without experience.

    The streak problem

The most common DIY complaint is streaks. Streaks happen because:

  • The rubber blade on the squeegee is worn or nicked
  • The cleaning solution leaves residue (most household glass cleaners do)
  • The technique isn't consistent — pressure varies across the stroke
  • Windows are cleaned in direct sunlight, causing the solution to dry before it's wiped

  • Professional cleaners avoid all of these by using the right equipment, working in the right conditions, and having done it enough times to get the technique right.

    The honest answer

For most Auckland homeowners with two-storey homes, a reasonable number of windows, and any kind of mineral or salt exposure — professional cleaning is worth it. Not because DIY is impossible, but because the time, equipment cost, safety risk, and likely result don't add up in favour of doing it yourself.

A professional clean is faster, safer, and produces a better result. For ground-floor windows on a small property, DIY is fine. For anything more complex, it's not the right tool for the job.
