Window Cleaning: DIY vs. Professional — Is It Worth Doing Yourself?

Most people have tried cleaning their own windows at some point. A microfibre cloth, some glass cleaner, maybe a squeegee from the hardware store. The result is usually streaky glass, missed corners, and the nagging feeling that it looked better before you started.

Here's an honest breakdown of when DIY makes sense and when it doesn't.

What DIY window cleaning actually involves

Cleaning windows properly — not just wiping them — requires the right tools, technique, and products. Professional window cleaners use:

Professional-grade squeegees with rubber blades that need regular replacement

Scrubbers and applicators to loosen dirt before squeegeeing

Proper cleaning solution (not household glass spray, which leaves residue)

Technique — the pull stroke, fanning, and detailing edges without leaving water marks

Ladders or extension poles for upper floors

None of this is complicated, but it takes practice to do without streaks. Most people don't clean windows often enough to get good at it.

When DIY is fine

DIY works reasonably well if:
